Texas population goes boom!
Texas is known for doing anything and everything in a big way. And our population figures are no exception. According to a recent article in the Wall Street Journal, one of out 12 Americans lives in Texas. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Texas has 25,145,561 residents, which is a 20.6 percent growth since the 2000 census figures. Nationally, the U.S. population increased 9.7 percent in the same period.
So what’s luring all these people to the Lone Star State? The affordable housing, lower unemployment rates and cost of living are major reasons. In Bryan, for example, the median cost of a single-family home is $150,000, according to Zillow.com. And the low unemployment rate in Texas is below the national average.
The temperate climate also plays a factor, along with beautiful landscapes, highly regarded colleges and universities—like Texas A&M here in Bryan-College Station—and strong economic roots. With a rich heritage in the aerospace, petrochemical, agriculture, and technology (Dell headquarters), the state provides a wide range of employment opportunities in growth industries.

Texas employment is rebounding faster than the national average
While the country is slowly gaining traction in economic recovery, Texas is picking up a faster pace. The Monthly Review of Texas Economy for January 2011 reports that Texas gained 231,700 jobs over the past 12 months, an increase of 2.3 percent. The private sector is playing a significant part, with an annual growth rate of 2.7 percent—more than twice the national pace of 1.2 percent during the same period.
Almost every industry in Texas is growing right now. With the exception of trade and information, every area posted more jobs in December 2010 than in December 2009:
- Mining and logging grew 14.9 percent
- Construction added 32,300 jobs (5.8 percent growth)
- Professional and business services gained 64,900 jobs (up 5.3 percent)
- Education and health services grew by 46,000 jobs
- Healthcare and social assistance added 47,400 jobs
Manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, financial services, transportation and warehousing, and the government sector all reported job growth.
The statewide unemployment rate was 8.3 percent, lower than the 9.4 percent national figure. Midland has the lowest figure at 4.9 percent; at just 5.9 percent, Bryan-College Station has the fourth lowest unemployment in Texas, almost half of the national average!
