The Monthly Review of Texas Economy for January 2011 reports that Texas gained 231,700 jobs over the past 12 months, an increase of 2.3 percent. • Construction added 32,300 jobs (5.8 percent growth)
• Professional and business services gained 64,900 jobs (up 5.3 percent)
• Education and health services grew by 46,000 jobs
• Healthcare and social assistance added 47,400 jobs

Manufacturing, leisure and hospitality, financial services, transportation and warehousing, and the government sector all reported job growth.

The statewide unemployment rate was 8.3 percent, lower than the 9.4 percent national figure. Midland has the lowest figure at 4.9 percent; at just 5.9 percent, Bryan-College Station has the fourth lowest unemployment in Texas, almost half of the national average!
